Hope Floats

“I think I could turn and live with the animals, they are so placid and self contained;
I stand and look at them long and long.
They do not sweat and whine about their condition;
They do not lie awake in the dark and weep for their sins;
They do not make me sick discussing their duty to God;
Not one is dissatisfied-not one is demented with the mania of owning things;
Not one kneels to another, nor his kind that lived thousands of years ago;
Not one is responsible or industrious over the whole earth.”
― Walt Whitman

Bhopal is not all shabby, in some nooks and crannies of our town some unsung heroes are helping sustain animal life. Here are two cases that were brought to our attention. Be sure to share some of your stories with us.

Case 1. Mr C is retired government official. With all the time on his hands he takes off every morning with last night’s let overs and feeds them to the street dogs. His neighbors are in awe of him, some of his friends have started following his example. The dogs in these areas are happy he retired.

Case 2. Rainy season is the breeding season for dogs. News pups are born amidst a downpour. Rain is quite detrimental to the health of the new born pups. Only few survive the harsh weather conditions. But the pups in the Sonagiri area have a better chance of survival since kids here give shelter to the pups in their homes and take care of them until they are old enough to fend for themselves. Generations of dogs have survived and lived joyfully on these streets for years. Hope the enthusiasm and concern of these kids doesn’t diminish with time.
